Same chemistry: pure carbon. Same crystal structure, the same refractive fire, the same flawless hardness of 10 — the hardest material known. It will never cloud, yellow or fade. Every diamond tester on earth reads it as a diamond, because it is one, and both the U.S. Federal Trade Commission and the world's gem laboratories classify it exactly that way. How It Is Actually Made
Two paths to the same crystal
Every lab-grown diamond begins as a thin slice of real diamond — a "seed." From there, science takes one of two routes to grow it into a full stone.
CVD
The seed rests in a sealed chamber filled with a carbon-rich gas such as methane. Microwave energy heats the gas into a glowing plasma, splitting it into individual carbon atoms.
Those atoms settle onto the seed and build the crystal upward, one atomic layer at a time, over several weeks.
HPHT
This one recreates the earth's own recipe. The seed sits with pure carbon and a metal catalyst, then is crushed under roughly 1.5 million pounds of pressure per square inch.
Heated past 1,400°C, the carbon dissolves and re-crystallizes onto the seed — the same forces that build diamonds deep in the mantle, compressed into days.

Gemologists sort every diamond into "types" by its atomic purity. The purest and rarest is Type IIa — diamond so chemically perfect it contains virtually no nitrogen. In 2026, a lab-grown diamond typically costs 70–90% less than a natural stone with the same 4Cs, and the gap only grows with size. One thing worth knowing: after years of steep annual price drops, lab-grown prices settled onto a stable floor in late 2025. The old habit of "waiting for it to get cheaper" no longer pays off — the big declines are behind us.
